Interstellar trade has brought genetic manipulation to a reality. Earth trades weapons and technology to Temecula for a program they have manufactured that when given to humans produce alterations and abilities. The results are inconsistent, but that hasn't stopped Earth's most powerful governments and organizations from weaponizing it. Along side a black market which has formed where normal citizens are attempting to generate alterations on their own, the abuse and mismanagement of the programs has hit peak consequence.
A race of creatures who cannot live on their own without a host. Each one, genetically derived from it's originator, become unique individuals through cellular division. They begin as only a cluster of cells but when they fuse with the brain of a sacrificial host they gain full awareness. They are Temecula's oldest known species, and with exposure to Earth's sheer breadth of unique hosts, they've positioned themselves to grow exponentially. Working closely with Earth's Infiltrate Bureau they have successfully organized a process to take deceased Earth creatures as hosts.
Years ago a program to genetically alter their DNA was adopted to help aid in a great war. These alterations have been fused into their being, unable to remove, and passed down through generations. It has lead to a great variety of physical and mental abilities, leaving no two Temeculans the same. A few original blood lines have persisted throughout their history with prominence and power. Many have been replaced by elected political leaders, but some remain as important figure heads. The differences among them have caused their species to splinter into factions, some angered by trade with Earth.
Dubbed the Phoenicians by Earth because of the massive organic ship that was grown over centuries on their planet for interstellar trade.Their species is linked together through a single organism rooted throughout their world. It shares nutrients, knowledge, and more importantly physical adaptations amongst the collective. With nearly limitless possibility for enhancements, they've emboldened a pursuit for exploration, and consequently adapted the biological requirements to do so. They serve as the linkage between worlds.
Enslaved Levels serve one purpose: gauge the power of those in their vicinity with their internal meter. This ability has been leveraged by the powerful on Temecula to out strategize those opponents who challenge their claims. They're often used as pawns in negotiations, or worse assassinated to subvert political positioning. There are only a few left, and even fewer who are free.
